Our Western Hermans (Hermanni Hermanni)
IMG_20220522_125706_722.jpg

We currently house both the western Hermanni Hermanni and the eastern Hermanni Boettgeri species of Hermann tortoises.

Our enclosure features:

A mixture of sand, soil, and limestone, planted with a variety of plants to provide shade and protection. The plants are kept in pots with the bases removed to allow root growth while safeguarding them from the tortoises, who enjoy digging and could harm the roots. The enclosure is landscaped with various rocks and gradients, and includes several hides to encourage the tortoises to exercise different muscle groups and provide mental stimulation.

The enclosure is equipped with an internet-connected thermostat, allowing us to adjust settings from anywhere in the world (Microclimate Evo Connected 3). We've installed Arcadia Pro T5 UV lighting and Arcadia floodlight basking bulbs, along with two tubular heaters. The panels have been upgraded to permit UV penetration.

A cold frame within the enclosure serves as a warm-up area for the tortoises. We advise opening the windows during the peak summer heat, as it can become quite warm inside. The cold frame also provides a shelter for the tortoises.

Our Hermanni Hermanni are housed separately from our Boettgeri to avoid any potential hybridization.

We're excited to share that we had our first hatchlings in the spring of 2022 from this group and look forward to more in the future.

These tortoises are also listed under CITES as they are an endangered species and are not commonly available in the UK.

We hope our images serve as an inspiration.
